Gii-us a lift mate!

My bike is in the bike shop being repaired (at a cost of well over £100, after about 1000 miles, it's finally needing most of the movable bits replacing!).

So, I've been doing a lot of walking this week. Today's little jaunt was from my office near Hammersmith Bridge, down to Putney and then across to Fulham Broadway. It was a lovely, if slightly chilly day, but it was very nice to be reminded of the beauty of nature as I wandered along besides the Thames. Really must remember to occasionally take some longer routes home on the bike in future...

The reason I was going this rather tortuous route was partially because I resent giving Ken Livingstone any more than £2 of my cash on any given day, but mostly because I was off with the boys to see 'The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy'.

Wasn't quite sure what to make of it in the end, at many times it seemed to just lack the zany comedy which marked out the earlier versions and resorted a bit too easily to slapstick - but I guess that was it, how do you make a big screen version of something which has already been interpreted in radio, book and TV formats and still keep it fairly true to the authors original intention whilst making it good entertainment to Mr. and Mrs. Joe Neverheardofit...

In many ways, it was a bit of a 'no-win' situation - I can't get away from the fact that David Dixon delivered Ford Prefect's lines better than Mos Def, and I couldn't really believe that Martin Freedman really loved tea as much as Simon Jones (who cameoed) ever did! Also, the idea that it was mostly a 'love story' between Arthur and Trillian somehow grates on me a bit, dialogue ended up clunky and trite...

On the other hand, Sam Rockwell made the Zaphod role his own and Zooey Daschael (or however you spell her name) stole the show as Trillian... the special FX (apart from Zaphod's second head) were generally good and the opening title sequence was genius.... so if you liked any other version of it, it'll be well worth a watch.

laters...
